State University Status
Jagannath Barooah University is a State University, established by the Government of Assam through 'The Jagannath Barooah University Act, 2023'. This is the highest form of recognition, granting the university full autonomy and the authority to award degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
UGC Recognition
The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), a statutory body of the Government of India. As a recognized university under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, our degrees are duly acknowledged and respected by all other institutions and employers across the country.

Our current status is built on a long and distinguished history of academic affiliations and achievements.
Early Affiliation
Established in 1930, J.B. College was initially affiliated with the prestigious Calcutta University, which was the highest seat of learning in the region at the time.
Affiliation with Dibrugarh University
Following the establishment of Dibrugarh University, J.B. College became one of its premier affiliated institutions, contributing significantly to the academic landscape of Assam.
UGC Autonomous Status
In recognition of its high academic standards, the UGC conferred Autonomous Status upon J.B. College. This was a critical milestone that granted us the freedom to design our own curriculum and conduct evaluations, paving the way for our evolution into a university.
Validity and Equivalence of Degrees
By virtue of being a State University established by a State Act and recognized by the UGC, all degrees awarded by Jagannath Barooah University are equivalent to the corresponding degrees of any other recognized university in India. Our graduates are eligible to appear for national-level tests like NET, SLET, GATE, and other competitive examinations, and are eligible for employment in any state, central government, or private sector role that requires a university degree.
